With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, Montrose is the perfect place to explore the outdoors regardless of the season. Montrose is centrally located in western Colorado, making it the ideal destination for your vacation. Main Street Montrose features a variety of shops, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, antique stores, and more.

  • Breakfast

    • Backstreet Bagel: Great bagels, breakfast/lunch sandwiches, coffee, smoothies and pastries. 

    • Jireh Cafe and Bakery: Amazing pastries, a limited but great breakfast and lunch menu

    • Sunrise Burritos: A small, family owned drive thru burrito kiosk. Delicious made to order burritos with green chili.

    • Bluecorn Cafe: Small breakfast/lunch menu

    • Starvin’ Arvin's: Traditional breakfast spot with a large menu

    • Don Gilberto's (Don Chuy): This little Mexican restaurant is famous in town for its huge and delicious breakfast burritos. There are two locations, one south of town in a small strip mall across from McDonalds. The other is located on your way out of town toward the Black Canyon next to the Conoco gas station.   


    Lunch & Dinner

    • Colorado Boy Pizzeria: Delicious pizza, salads and brewery. On Main Street. A favorite! 

    • Crash Burger: Old school burger joint with burgers, fries, milkshakes.

    • Subwiches: Family owned sandwich food truck located on Main St & San Juan 

    • Horsefly Brewery: Fun atmosphere, beautiful outdoor patio, great burgers. Can get busy, don’t go if you are in a hurry. Located on Main Street. Dog friendly!

    • Double Barrel Tacos: Great taco shop on Main Street

    • Trattoria Di Sofia: Small family owned Italian restaurant. Very good! 

    • Stone House: Large menu with a large variety- steak, seafood, pastas

    • Hiro Japanese Steakhouse: Sushi restaurant located on Main Street

    • Ted Nelson’s Steakhouse: locally owned steakhouse. Reservations recommended

    • Panda Palace: Chinese restaurant. Very fast for take out. 

  • Coffee

    • San Juan Brews: Coffee house and brewery on Main Street

    • Jireh Cafe and Bakery: Located just past the airport. One of our favorites

    • Cimarron Coffee Roasters: Buy a drink or a bag of coffee to take home

    • Coffee Trader: Two locations. One on Main Street, drive thru on Townsend

    • Rathbone Parlor Bar: great coffee inside of the Rathbone Hotel downtown

    • Entroms: Coffee shop located inside the candy store 

    • Looney Bean Coffee: South of town by target. The best cinnamon rolls

    • Starbucks: Drive thru location next to Sonic, inside South City Market & Target

    • Dunkin’ Donuts: Located on Townsend and Niagara 

    • Buckaroos Slices & Scoops: Our favorite local ice cream shop

    • Alpen Confections: A locally owned chocolate shop. Delicious chocolates made right in the shop. 

    • Enstrom’s Candies- Best known for their toffee, they also have candy, ice cream and coffee

    • Culver’s: Located south of town, next to Target

    • Baskin-Robbins- Located in the Dunkin’ Donuts building on Townsend.

    • Cold Stone Creamery- Located next to Jimmy John’s on Townsend. 

    • Dairy Queen- Located on Tenth and Townsend.

    • San Juan Brews: Craft brewery & coffee house on Main Street. 

    • Pomona Brewing Company: Great beers and food menu. Dogs are welcome outside on the patio! 

    • Rathbone Parlor Bar- Located inside the Rathbone hotel right off Main Street

    • Phelanies: Speakeasy themed cocktail bar. You need a “password” to get in (found on Facebook or at Horsefly Brewery next door).

    • Storm King Distilling: They make their own tequila, whiskey, bourbon, vodka & gin. Food trucks outside.

    • Shelter Distilling- Spirits, cocktails, beer and food. Located on the connect trail with beautiful views and outdoor patio & games

    • Silver Basin Brewing: beer, wine, mixed drinks and small bites

Hiking and Biking Trails

  • Curecanti National Recreation Area: Located about an hour east of Montrose, this recreational area offers many different hikes for all skill levels. Listed below are some of our favorites. 

    • Pine Creek Trail: This trail begins with a descent of 200+ stairs, but then is a relatively easy and flat trailhead along the Gunnison River in the Upper Black Canyon. You can learn about the history of the Rio Grande Railroad. 2.4 miles long. 

    • Curecanti Creek Trail: This hike is a little more difficult because of the 800+ feet gained on the way out. On the hike in, you will descend into the canyon through a forest and past many waterfalls. There is a calm pool at the bottom where you can wade. The trip back up can be more challenging. About 4 miles round trip.

    • Mesa Creek Trail: An easy trail along the river with canyon views. In late spring the spillways to the Morrow Point Dam open. 2 miles round trip & good for kids.

  • The Connect Trail is a paved path along the Uncompahgre River, stretching 7 miles from north to south through Montrose. It’s an ideal location for wildlife viewing, enjoying San Juan mountain views, and engaging in activities like hiking, biking, walking, or jogging. Along the trail, you'll find several dog parks, playgrounds, bike parks, and the new Shelter Distillery.

  • Black Canyon National Park: With many different trails, there is something for everyone! Two of our favorites include: 1) Warner Point Nature Trail: Located at the end of S. Rim Road. 1.5 miles round trip. Great views of the areas surrounding Montrose and of the Canyon. 2) Rim Rock Nature Trail: Relatively easy 2 miles round trip hike with great views of the canyon. Start at Campground Loop C or the South Rim Visitor Center. 

  • Cerro Summit Recreation Area: Located about 14 miles east of Montrose on Hwy 50, this recreational area offers over 110 acres of property and features many different trails great for hiking and mountain biking. There are both easy and intermediate hiking trails.

  • Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area: About 15 minutes north of Montrose you will find many different hikes and mountain biking trails through adobe badlands and pinion and juniper covered slopes. These trails go for miles and miles. Take Highway 50 north of town toward Olathe. Right before you reach the town of Olathe, take a right onto Falcon road. This will lead you into the conservation area.

Seasonal Activities and Festivals

  • The Star Drive-In Movie Theatre: Right next to our home, this drive-in movie theatre has been owned and operated by the same family for over 70 years! They have traditional in-car sound and FM connection. There is a concession stand where you can buy hamburgers, fries, drinks and candy. They run movies every night through the summer. 

  • Montrose Summer Music Series: Free concerts are held the first Friday of each month during the summer at Montrose Amphitheater at Cerise Park.

  • FUNC Fest (Fun on the Uncompahgre): Held on the 2nd Saturday of August every year at the Montrose Water Sports Park. You can watch or partake in water fun by kayaking, SUP, or just floating down the river. There is live music, a beer garden, and vendors. 

  • Black Canyon Auto Show: Held Memorial Day Weekend, the black canyon auto show closes down Main Street with many classic cars and trucks on display. 

  • Palisade Lavender Festival: Held at the end of June at Riverbend Park in Palisade, which is about an hour and 15 minute drive from Montrose. Enjoy tours of the Lavender fields, vendors, demonstrations and wreath making classes. 

  • Fourth of July Fun: On Fourth of July Montrose has a large parade down Main Street followed by a great fireworks show at sundown. 

  • Montrose County Fair and Rodeo: Held at the end of July at the fairgrounds. Come see some animals up close, check out the vendors, music, and art, or watch a rodeo show. 

  • Olathe Sweet Corn FestivalA festival held in August to celebrate the famous sweet corn grown in the neighboring town of Olathe, 15 minutes down the road. Come try our famous sweet corn and enjoy some live music, vendors, drinks, and food. 

  • Palisade Peach Festival: Held the second weekend in August in Palisade, Co. Come try the famous locally grown peaches, vendors, music, kids activities, food and goods from around the valley.

  • Cedaredge Applefest: Held at the beginning of October in Cedaredge, which is about a 45 minute drive north of Montrose. Enjoy hundreds of vendor booths, live music, children’s activities, and of course the famous Cedaredge apples! 

  • Take a Scenic Fall Drive: Take a drive over one of the area’s many scenic byways to view our fall colors in late September through October. Keebler Pass will take you from Paonia to Crested Butte and offers some beautiful views, colors and hiking. Red Mountain Pass, a drive to Telluride, or Owl Creek Pass are other great options! 

  • Year-round Access to Black Canyon National Park: The South Rim Road is open to vehicles from mid-April to mid-November. In winter, the South Rim Road is open to the visitor center. The remainder of the road is closed to vehicles, but open to cross country skiing and snowshoeing as conditions permit.

  • San Juan Skijoring Event: Every second full weekend in January you can view the unique sport of skijoring in Ridgway, CO. Watch as skiers race down a specially designed track behind a galloping horse. It is a thrilling sport that connects the area’s love of winter sports with local ranching heritage. 

  • Ouray Ice Festival and Competition: Head south 45 minutes to Ouray in mid January for one of the largest Ice Climbing events in the country! You can watch some of the world’s best ice climbers traverse the huge ice walls or even try it out for yourself on the beginners' wall.

Ridgway, Colorado (30-minute drive)

  • Ridgway State Park: This large state park has three entrances. You can find many camping and RV sites, fishing, hiking, and a large reservoir for water activities. There is a swim beach and many different areas that are great for kayaking and stand up paddle boarding. You can rent a SUP at the third entrance to the park. 

  • Dennis Weaver Memorial Park: There are many different hiking and mountain biking trails you can take up into the mountains here. Or if you’d like an easier walk there is a beautiful, paved walking path along the river that will take you into town. It is about 2 miles round trip. There are picnic tables and bathrooms located along the river trail.

  • A Walk Through Town: Explore the fun shops and variety of delicious restaurants.

  • Owl Creek Pass: Drive the pass, which can be accessed just north of Ridgway, before you enter town. The pass takes you up to a little more than 10,000 feet to Silver Jack Reservoir. It is a well-maintained gravel road that can be driven by most vehicles. Bring a fishing pole, hiking shoes, or a picnic to enjoy the beautiful scenery. If you complete the pass you will end up on HWY 50 just east of Montrose. This pass usually does not open until Early June due to snow.

  • True Grit Cafe: Soak in "the Grit's" atmosphere, rich in history and culture – from John Wayne memorabilia to our local hunters' mounts— and enjoy the quality comfort meal. Be sure to visit the unique shops in downtown Ridgway.

Ouray, Colorado (45-minute drive)

  • Sulfur-Free Hot Springs:

  • Box Cañon Falls: A short 500-foot walk to view a stunning waterfall.

  • The Perimeter Trail: Ouray's Perimeter Trail is a unique 5.6-mile hiking experience that features remarkably varied terrain, unmatched scenery, four waterfalls, six bridges, up close geology and a hidden troll. It has multiple starting and stopping points throughout town, or you can opt to hike the entire loop.

  • The Million Dollar Highway: U.S. Route 550 between Ouray and Silverton, Co, offers a winding road through the mountains with steep drop-offs and breathtaking views. It’s especially beautiful in the fall!

  • Basecamp Ouray for guided rock climbing, ice climbing, or Via Ferrata trips.

  • Jeep Tours and Trails: Rent a Jeep or UTV, or join a Jeep tour to explore the surrounding mountains, ghost towns, abandoned mines, wildflowers, wildlife, and stunning vistas.

Telluride, Colorado (1.5-hour drive)

Winter: Ski the #1 Resort in North America by readers of Condé Nast Traveler. Or spend a day fat biking, nordic skiing or sledding. Rent some skates and enjoy a fun time on the ice at the Reflection Plaza Ice Skating Rink in Mountain Village.

  • Summer and Fall: Park at Mountain Village and take the free gondola ride into Telluride. Enjoy beautiful views, fall colors, mountain hikes, and explore the town’s shops and restaurants.

  • Popular Telluride Hikes

    San Miguel River Trail: This walking and bike trails winds through town along the river and out to Pandora Mine.

    Bridal Veil Falls: A very popular hike that follows a 4WD road to the base of the tallest free falling waterfall in Colorado. 

    Bear Creek Falls: Follow the trail through the Bear Creek Preserve to a beautiful view of the falls. 

  • Good Eats in Telluride:

    Brown Dog Pizza: Our favorite place to eat in Telluride! They serve Detroit style pizza, subs, salads and pasta. 

    Uno, Dos, Tres Tacos & Tequila: A fun place to get tacos and margaritas near the Gondola in town. 

    Between the Covers Bookstore & Espresso Bar: A locally owned bookstore that has a great selection of books, knick knacks, souvenirs, and delicious coffee.

The Grand Mesa (1-hour drive)

  • The world’s largest flat-top mountain, the Grand Mesa features more than 300 lakes, forests of pine and aspen trees, as well as opportunities for hiking, snowshoeing, backcountry skiing, and fishing.

Montrose Regional Airport is just a 6 minute drive from M & E Homes and offers direct flights on United, Delta, American, and Southwest Airlines.
